Workshop 1:
The Language of Light

In this introductory session, we’ll explore the layout and composition of illuminated manuscripts. You’ll learn the structure behind medieval pages, how to create balance and rhythm, and how to sketch your own initial inspired by historical models.

Workshop 2:
Gold & Glory

This session focuses on the decorative elements: gold leaf, borders, miniature motifs. You’ll experiment with metallic accents, rich colors, and techniques to make your work shine (literally).

Workshop 3:
Painting the Past

In the final workshop, you’ll combine your layout and gilding skills to paint a full illuminated piece, learning how medieval artists layered pigments and worked with natural materials to tell visual stories.

Tales in Ink

In this session, you’ll explore the beauty of medieval calligraphy, learning how to write in Gothic script and integrate text into your artwork—just like the scribes who brought illuminated stories to life.

Workshop 1: La Magia del Bianco e Nero

In questo primo workshop, esploreremo l’arte del disegno a matita in bianco e nero, imparando a giocare con luci, ombre e contrasti per creare profondità e realismo. Mitch ti guiderà passo dopo passo, svelando tecniche avanzate per dare vita ai tuoi soggetti con il solo potere della grafite.

Workshop 2: Colore ed Espressività

Dopo aver padroneggiato il bianco e nero, passeremo al colore con matite colorate e marker. Scoprirai come sovrapporre strati, sfumare e combinare i colori per ottenere risultati sorprendenti. Un’occasione unica per sperimentare e affinare il tuo stile sotto la guida di uno dei migliori artisti italiani.

Workshop 3: L’Anima dell’Acqua e dei Pigmenti

Nel terzo workshop ci immergeremo nell’uso di acquerelli e gouache, due strumenti affascinanti e versatili. Imparerai a controllare l’acqua, a creare effetti unici e a sfruttare la fluidità di questi colori per rendere le tue opere ancora più espressive e coinvolgenti.

You may know me on Instagram as @bookillumination.

I have been interested in art from an early age and have painted and drawn a lot - primarily portraits and animals. After school, I studied book studies, German studies and art history at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (master's degree in 2012, PhD in 2017).
During my studies, I focused on Johannes Gutenberg and the invention of book printing, among other things. I was fascinated by the transitional phase between the manuscript era and letterpress printing, when the new technology made it possible to mass-produce texts, but the initials and decorations added by hand still made each copy unique.

Since then, I have been working part-time as a freelance artist and have specialized in the field of illumination. There are not so many artists in this particular niche, but many continue to be fascinated by this historical art form. I get a lot of questions about the materials and techniques and often whether I give workshops. Over the years, I've acquired quite a bit of knowledge about illumination and since I've realized, that others want to learn too, I'd like to finally share my knowledge with you.

Through my studies, I came into contact with the Gutenberg Museum and the Gutenberg Foundation in Mainz. The latter manages the Gutenberg Shop and sells, among other things, reproductions of individual pages from the Gutenberg Bible - as in the original with the printed text and coloring by hand. Here I saw the opportunity to combine my passion for painting and my theoretical knowledge and started painting these pages in 2013.

Ciao, sono Mitch!

Sono un artista. Mi sono appassionato e avvicinato al disegno in maniera del tutto inaspettata, possiamo tranquillamente dire che sia stato lui a trovare me in realtà.

Ho sempre disegnato sporadicamente nella mia vita adolescenziale e ho ripreso seriamente durante l’estate del 2019. Mai avrei pensato che questo un giorno si potesse trasformare nel mio lavoro.

Non ho frequentato nessun corso o nessuna scuola di disegno, sono un grande sostenitore del metodo empirico. Essendo un autodidatta come te comprendo perfettamente tutte le frustrazioni del caso.

Durante il corso della mia vita ho testato svariate attività prima di trovare il disegno, sono infatti laureato in lingue straniere (non molto propedeutico come percorso). 
Solo nel settembre del 2020 ho aperto il mio canale TikTok (un po' a tempo perso) che con grande sorpresa è esploso dal giorno alla notte. Quello è stato il momento in cui ho capito cosa volessi fare.

Tutti i giorni ricevo tantissimi messaggi di persone che grazie a me hanno avuto modo di riavvicinarsi al disegno, trovando il coraggio di ricominciare (non c'è nulla che mi renda più fiero).

Capisco la frustrazione di non reputare il proprio lavoro abbastanza buono da essere mostrato. Comprendo la mancanza di ispirazione e il continuo paragone che deriva dal confronto con altri artisti.

Ricevere tutti questi messaggi è stato d’ispirazione per me, invece, per prendere una decisione e creare i miei corsi di disegno accessibili a tutti, anche a chi si trova all’inizio di questo bellissimo percorso, per aiutare tutti gli appassionati di disegno a migliorare e crescere artisticamente.

E dopo più di 2 anni che la nostra community di studenti cresce senza sosta, ho finalmente deciso di creare uno spazio per poterci conoscere dal vivo e sperimentare la magia di disegnare e migliorare tutti insieme. Sono veramente emozionato per questo nostro primo retreat, sarà un momento magico e spero che tu riesca a venire!
